Hugh Ross Mackintosh was educated at the John Neilson Institute, Paisley, Tain Royal Academy, George Watson's Academy, Edinburgh, University of Edinburgh, New College, Edinburgh, and the universities of Freiburg, Halle and Warburg. His time at the University of Edinburgh saw particular influence from Andrew Seth Pringle-Pattison and Robert Purves Hardie. He was licensed by the Free Church minister in 1896 and served as assistant to Rev Charles Watson at Largs before becoming Minister at Tayport and then Beechgrove United Free Church, Aberdeen.

in 1904 he was appointed Professor of Systematic Theology at New College, Edinburgh, and he became Professor of Christian Dogmatics at the University of Edinburgh in 1935. At New College his students included John and Donald Macpherson Baillie, Henry Pitney Van Dusen and Edgar Primrose Dickie.
